Two men have been charged with murder in connection with a stabbing death in Docklands
Five men have been detained in connection with a stabbing incident in Melbourne’s Docklands, which resulted in the death of one young man and the serious injury of another.
Following a vicious claimed stabbing incident last Sunday, Alier Riak, a promising basketball player, was slain and his brother Kuol Riak, 26, was gravely injured.
Mr Riak, a promising basketball player from Western Australia, and his brother were reportedly attacked on March 13 in Docklands, according to police.
Emergency services were summoned to Bourke St, near Harbour Esplanade, about 3.20 a.m., following reports of a disturbance between a group of young males.
The basketballer died a short time after the brothers were transferred to the hospital.
On Friday morning, two males were apprehended during searches on residences in Derrimut and Wollert, areas north and west of Melbourne’s CBD.
Police questioned a 19-year-old Derrimut guy and a 21-year-old Wollert man.
A 21-year-old Tarneit male was also detained and questioned by police in Docklands on Friday night.
Murder charges were filed against the Tarneit and Derrimut men, while affray and violent disorder charges were filed against the Wollert guy.
On Friday night, the three appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and were remanded in jail.
After searches on houses in Taylors Hill and Epping in Melbourne’s north, two further arrests were made on Saturday morning.
Police will now question a 22-year-old Taylors Hill man and a 20-year-old Epping guy.
Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill of the Crime Command said the brother came from a respectable family and that police were working hard to figure out what happened.
“The victims of this incident were innocent parties who were good people – good students, good athletes and from a good family,” he stated.
“
These arrests were the result of an incredible amount of work by Crime Command units including the homicide squad, gang crime squad and armed crime squad, while well supported by local police from the north west metro region.
“It’s also a strong and demonstrable statement that for those choosing to engage in this type of violent and senseless crime, police will be relentless in their pursuit of you.
The murder investigation is still underway, and authorities have issued a new request for witnesses.
